Frequently Asked Questions: The 403(b)
Why is a 403(b) important?

Pension Supplement
NCPS teachers and administrators automatically participate in the Connecticut Teachers' Retirement System pension plan. Even the best pension won't fund 100% of retirement. A 403(b) can provide a savings supplement to your pension.

Lower Taxes
Contributions to a 403(b) reduce taxable income while the earnings on the account grow tax-deferred until withdrawal (assumed to be at retirement). A $100 contribution will reduce federal income taxes by roughly $25 (assuming that the participant is in the 25 percent marginal tax bracket).

Eligibility
Not all NCPS employees are eligible to participate in the Connecticut Teachers' Retirement System pension plan. However, all NCPS employees who work at least twenty hours a week are eligible to contribute to a 403(b).
